How-To

Sending Messages from APRS to SMS

To send a message from APRS to SMS using the following format:

@<number> <message>

The @ symbol is followed by the 10 digit destination <number> of the SMS user or alias (UK use 12 Digits!). The words following the destination will be the message.

Example:

To: SMS

@9876543210 No cell coverage. Get me on the radio!

Once the message is delivered to the SMS user it will appear as follows:

@WA7BF-3 No cell coverage here. Get me on the radio!

Sending from SMS to APRS

To send a message from SMS to APRS, your message to the gateway number should be in the following format:

@<callsign> <message>

The @ symbol is followed by the destination <callsign> of the APRS user. The words following the destination will be the message.

Example:

To: 8663524096

@WA7BF-3 Did you forget your cellphone?

Once the message is delivered to the APRS user the message will appear as follows:

@9876543210 Did you forget your cellphone?

After a message has been sent to that APRS user, all messages without the callsign prefix will be routed to them unless a message is sent or received from a different callsign.

SMS to APRS Replies

SMS users who reply back to APRS users will still receive their messages if not prefaced with @<callsign>

However, there is no guarantee they will receive it if the system has been updated or restarted.

If the system has been updated or restarted since the last APRS to SMS message, the “last call” log is erased.

So it is encouraged that SMS users preface the message with the destination user!

Example:

To: 8663524096

Did you forget your cellphone?

Once the message is delivered to the APRS user the message will appear as follows:

@9876543210 Did you forget your cellphone?

Alias Management

The alias management system uses 10 digit numbers ONLY! Do not prefix with 1! UK use 12 digits!

Example:

To: SMS
Add New Alias

#alias #add bobby 9876543210

Remove Alias

#alias #remove bobby 9876543210

Using the Alias

@bobby hey bro! how you doing?

Manually Check Missed Messages

APRSM

Auto Check Missed Messages

In your status or comment of a beacon put in APOSMS. This will trigger the system to automatically send you missed messages every 10 minutes that beacon or comment is heard with the trigger. The system will try to send you each message up 3 times until you have acked each message.

To check messages for both SMS and MAIL, use ALLMSG.

This should only be done on 1 device per callsign. You may otherwise miss messages as they could be delivered to another device.
